Complex dynamics in an OLG model of neoclassical growth with endogenous retirement age and public pensions

چکیده
This study analyses the dynamics of a general equilibrium, overlapping-generations (closed) economy with pay-as-you-go public pensions and tax-financed health investments that affect the retirement timewhen old. Life of the typical agent is divided between youth (firth period) and old age (second period). The latter period of life is, in turn, divided betweenwork time and retirement time in a proportion contingent on an individual’s state of health. We show that: (i) a unique non-trivial steady state exists, and (ii) when the labour income tax rates used to finance health expenditure or public pensions are included in an intermediate range of values, complex dynamics occur when individuals have perfect foresight. This holds because the increase either in the fraction of time spent working when old or disability pensions reduces savings and capital accumulation. In addition, dynamic phenomena such as multiple bubbling structures related to the bifurcation diagram can be observed. Under some general assumptions, we show that the rise in health care expenditure and/or public pensions initially destabilises the steady-state equilibrium and causes complex dynamics but eventually acts as a stabilising device. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Aging and political decision making on public pensions.
"In this paper decision making on public pensions in a representative democracy is modeled within the framework of the well-known two-overlapping-generations (OLG) general-equilibrium model with rational expectations. The model is used to analyze the effects of aging on the economy in general and on the evolution of public pension schemes in particular, where aging is interpreted as a combinati...
متن کاملBiomedical Progress Rates as New Parameters for Models of Economic Growth in Developed Countries
While the doubling of life expectancy in developed countries during the 20th century can be attributed mostly to decreases in child mortality, the trillions of dollars spent on biomedical research by governments, foundations and corporations over the past sixty years are also yielding longevity dividends in both working and retired population. Biomedical progress will likely increase the health...

The purpose of this study is investigating and determining rate of seizing assets and acquisition other companies by public sector companies. We estimate this rate at various stages of the life cycle of the company. Therefore, according to their size and age, the companies have been divided into small, large, young, and mature groups, and for this purpose, we have collected data from a sample o...
متن کاملOptimal Public Pensions: Full Coverage for End-of-Life Consumption
Public pensions and private saving are commonly considered complementary funding sources from which the elderly should draw simultaneously throughout their retirement. This paper shows that sequential use of funding sources would be significantly more effi cient —a period of entirely private funding followed by a period of consumption fully financed by public pensions. Thus the standard multi-p...
